aerial photograph of Cromwell's Mound Civil War fieldwork Preston Lancashire UK. Cromwell's Mound is an English Civil War gun emplacement constructed just before the battle of Preston on 17th - 19th August 1648. The gun emplacement is constructed alongside Moss Leach Brook and may have been adapted from a dam previously on the site. The Battle of Preston was the last major battle of the civil war and resulted in the defeat of the Royalist Army by Cromwell's New Model Army. The Royalists had slightly superior numbers but their army was spread out all the way between Lancaster and Wigan. The New Model Army approached from Skipton and achieved a decisive victory, chasing the Royalists through Wigan and all the way to Ashbourne where the remnants of the Royalist Army surrendered.
