The castle has been little researched but was probably built in the 13th Century by Fulk Fitz Warin III on the strategically important border between England and Wales which had been the scene of much fighting in the wars between King John and Llewelyn Fawr which cumulated in the fall of Shrewsbury to Llewelyn in 1215. Its likley the castle was constructed shortly after the peace agreement at the treaty of Worcester in 1218 between Llewelyn Fawr and Henry III ( king John having died in 1216 ).

aerial photograph of World War 1 practice trenches at Iron Mills Shropshire England UK. Still clearly visible a hundred years after they were dug these WW I military practice trenches were dug by new recruits as they trained for combat in the trenches of France. My Grandfather was a Royal Engineer and built similar training trenches in North Wales followed by real ones on the Somme. He explained how they worked including building them as a zig zag so that if part of it was taken it was not possible to shoot far along the lines. You can see the layout here of zig zags and the way a forward trench is built linked to a reserve trench in case the forward one was taken.

aerial photographs of Stokesay Castle Shropshire England UK. Built in the 13th Century, Stokesey was besieged and fell to the Parliamentarians. After the war Parliament ordered the castle to be slighted but fortunately only the curtain wall was damaged leaving most of the castle to survive to the present day. It is now in the care of English Heritage and open to the public.

aerial photographs of Wroxeter Roman town in Shropshire England UK. Known as Viroconium Cornoviorum in roman times, it was the 4th largest Roman Town in Britain and home to some 15000 people. The large wall you can see in the photograph is the remains of the Basilica and is the largest piece of free-standing Roman wall in England. The town was abandoned some time after the Romans left Britain with evidence of occupation ceasing after the 8th Century.
