One of the clearest and best preserved deserted medieval villages, the line of the former main street is clearly visible in these aerial photographs. The layout of houses , tracks and out buildings all still show clearly and the village is surrounded by a well preserved system of ridge and furrow field patterns. At the southern end of the village is the outline of a moat which once contained the manor house. Poll Tax records show around 15 families living here, however by 1563 the village had become populated with only two families remaining. In the 16th century the manor house was replaced by a hall at the northern end of the former village.

aerial photographs of Burrough-on-the-hill late bronze age / early iron age Univallate hill fort in Leicestershire England UK. The fort is remarkably well preserved and the main entrance flanked by large ramparts is immediately discernible in the photograph. The area around the hillfort had been occupied since Mesolithic times with the fort being constructed around the late bronze age. Most dating evidence found at the site covers the period 100 BC and AD 50 with occupation ending around the time of the Roman withdrawal in 400SD. The area was farmed during the medieval period and ridge and furrow field patterns can still be seen around the fort. Bone dice and gaming pieces have been found on the site as well as a bone flute indicating Iron Age life was not all about work.

The building we see today is an Elizabethan manor house, however the lighting of this aerial photo shows the archaeological remains of the built Augustinian priory, which preceded it. The Priory was founded in 1119 and active until dissolved by Henry VIII. The chapel attached to the rear of the house remains from the original medieval Priory.

aerial photographs of North Marefield deserted medieval village (DMV) Leicestershire England UK. North Marefield is one of over 2000 deserted medieval villages in the UK. The remains of over 20 building platforms and a moated site can be seen.Documentary evidence shows a chapel on the site in 1166 and remains relating to it have been excavated on the western side of the village in recent years. The village became deserted when arable farming gave way to sheep farming in the 15th century.

The land was aquired by the Ashby family some time in the 13th Century.Poll Tax records of 1377 show 25 tax payers living in the viallge. By the 16th century the Ashbys had enclosed the area and removed the villages. While little remains of the village the medieval ridge and furrow ploughing is well preserved and surrounds the hall. The Hall itself was built in Jacobean Style between 1618 and 1636 by George Ashby who was also High Sheriff of Leicestershire. In more recent times Stilton Cheese was produced at the hall, although this business ceased in 2011 due to some Listeria Histeria. Nikolaus Pevsner in the Pevsner Architectural Guides describes the house as " the most important early-seventeenth century house in the county".

aerial photograph of Sauvey Castle, Launde, near Withcote, Leicestershire, England, UK.The Castle was built during the reign of King Stephen 1135-54. Stephen reigned in a time of war with numerous challenges to his sovereignty and many castles were built. Sauvey was one of the less common shell keep castle designs of which just 71 are known. The castle was never an important one and by 1373 it had fallen into disuse and materials were taken from it to build Rockingham Castle.
