Allington Castle is a medieval castle constructed between 1279 and 1299 to replace a previous adulterine castle which had been built during the Anarchy and was demolished under the orders of Henry II. Visitors during the Tudor period included Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey. After Henrys death, the owner of the Castle, Thomas Wyatt, led a failed rebellion against Queen Mary I ( Bloody Mary ). Wyatt was executed and the castle confiscated by the crown. Thereafter the castle gradually fell into ruin until it was restored at the beginning of the 20th Century.The ruin was painted in 1798 by Joseph Mallord William Turner.
