aerial photograph of tunnel vent along Sough Tunnel in Darwen Lancashire constructed in 1847 by the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe & West Yorkshire Railway. The vents were constructed both to vent smoke from the steam engines of the day and also to relieve pressure as trains move along the tunnel. Because the pressure relief function is still important today the vents were renovated in 2020 and a grill cover added. The inaccessibility of the site meant the work was completed using a helicopter.
