aerial photograph of Scarborough Castle, Scarborough, North Yorkshire England UK . Scarborough Castle was built around 1150 on the site of an Iron Age promontory fort and Roman Signal Station. The stone castle replaced a previous wooden castle built around 1130. The castle was of immense strategic importance and continually fought over during the medieval period. Between 1642 and 1648 , during the English Civil War , the castle changed hands seven times. The Castle was refortified in1745 during the Jacobite Rebellion and again during the Napoleonic period. It was significantly damaged by naval gunfire during a raid by the German fleet during the First World War and was manned again during the Second World War. Today the Castle is one of Yorkshire's top tourist attractions and managed by English Heritage.
