Formerly a major coaching route the A30 has connected Lands End and the the South West to London and the East since the 17th century when it appeared on maps dated to 1675. In the 19th century it was known as "Great Road to Land's End". Unfortunately it was not just popular with tourists and in the 17th century was frequented by highwaymen. One such highwayman was William Davies who was hanged in 1689. These days Highway robbery is known as "Vehicle Excise Duty" and no longer results in hanging.
