aerial photograph of Bilbrough York Yorkshire YO23. Bilbrough was the home of .Thomas Fairfax, parliamentary commander-in-chief during the English Civil War and he is buried in the village church. The name Bilbrough means the fortress of the Bila, who were a tribe who lived in the area until the dark ages. My eye was caught while flying over at Ingrish Hill just above and to the left of the village. It is surrounded by ancient ridge and furrow field markings which stop at the top of the hill. Could this hill have been the fortress of ancient times? I think it needs a visit from the Time Team.
