aerial photograph of Ripley Castle Yorkshire England UK. The Castle has been a family home since the 14th Century. The house has been altered through the ages with a gate house dating to the 15th Century and the tower from the 16th century. The property was considerably altered and added to in 1783-6 with architecture by William Belwood. The ornamental lakes were built around 1843 for Sir William Amcotts Ingilby. In 1605 the owner, Sir William Ingleby, was involved with the Gunpowder plot , allowing the plotters to stay at the castle, for which he was later tried but aquitted. His successor was a Royalist during the English Civil War and following the defeat at Marston Moor hid in the priest hole in the castle while Oliver Cromwell stayed here. Today the property is Grade I listed and a scheduled ancient monument.
