The gardens were first laid out in 1930 later named as a memorial to industrialist Alfred Herbert's. The buildings in the centre of the image are two almshouses known as Lady Herbert's homes which were built in 1935-7. The medieval city walls date from the 14th century AD. The walls were in use up to the English civil war when they were refortified. Following the restoration of the monarchy, Charles II had them demolished. The two remaining towers shown in the photograph are Cook Street Gate (top) and Swanswell Gate (bottom). Originally there were 32 towers including 12 gatehouses.
