Leicester Castle was built just after the Normal Conquest around 1070 AD and is built on top of the Roman city walls.The castle was used as a Royal residence during the medieval period but by the 16th century it was used as a courthouse. While much of the castle has been lost, the Motte, Great Hall, Northern Gateway and the ruins of the Magazine Gateway are extant. The Grade I listed Great hall was built in the 12th century by Robert le Bossu, second Earl of Leicester, and is one of the oldest surviving timber aisled halls in Europe.
