Grade II listed Rylands Mill was built in 1866 to 1868 as cotton spinning and weaving mill , then known as Gidlow Mill. The architect was George Woodhouse and the mill cost £141,000 to built, a tremendous sum in the late 19th century and equivillent to around £16 m today. Spinning stopped in 1954 after which the building was operated by Great Universal Stores until 2006 when it was taken over by Wigan College of Technology. In 2006 it was sold to a property developer and has since been abandoned and allowed to fall into decay.
