Wearmouth Bridge was built in 1929 to replace a previous cast iron structure dating from the end of the 18th century. The bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Sir William Arrol & Co. It was opened on 31 October 1929 by the Duke of York, the future King George VI. Monkwearmouth Railway Bridge was built in 1879 and designed by T.E. Harrison. It has been a listed structure since 1978.
