aerial photograph of Caergwrle Castle ( Castell Caergwrle ) in Flintshire Wales UK. Caergwrle Castle was built in 1277 by Dafydd ap Gruffydd, Prince of Wales, the last independent ruler of Wales. When Edward I attacked the defenders slighted the castle and withdrew. Edward had planned to rebuild the castle but abandoned it after a fire destroyed much of the remaining structure in 1283. It has lain in ruins ever since.
